TRSA offers additional $5.8m prizemoney for South Australian racing

9 August 2019

Thoroughbred Racing SA has today announced an additional $5.8 million will be added to overall prizemoney levels, representing an overall increase of almost 15%.

The benefits will be felt across racing with a strategy that deliberately puts the prizemoney increases into races that traditionally benefit South Australian participants rather than interstate trained horses.

At $5.8 million, the increase is more than double what the thoroughbred industry received through the State Government’s racing stimulus package announced in the 2019/20 State Budget.

In terms of Morphettville, there are some important numbers to consider with more than 60% of all metropolitan races now attracting $50,000 in prizemoney. In detail:

  • $45,000 races will immediately jump to $50,000;
  • $35,000 non-Maiden races will increase to $40,000; and
  • $30,000 Maiden races will increase to $35,000.

As the State’s largest club and training centre, this is welcome news for Morphettville as it will inject new levels of confidence into racing.

A strong racing industry needs highly motivated and incentivised participants and the metropolitan prizemoney increases will be critical in helping us achieve this.

The rest of the State will also share in the increases, with provincial races benefiting from increases of up to $5,000 per race across both maiden and non-maiden races, while all country cups will increase to $25,000 with significant jumps to their maiden and non-maiden races as well. You can read the TRSA media release in full here.

All the prizemoney increases come into effect on 1 September – so it promises to be an exciting spring.
