What’s On This Week – Derby Day edition

30 April 2024

It’s another big week of action at Morphettville this weekend as we take in the 2024 Thomas Farms South Australian Derby.

And, if Sangster and Oaks Day is anything to go by, you don’t want to miss it.

On the track, we will see local hopes A Samurai Mind (Dan Clarken & Oopy MacGillivray) and Air Assault (Andrew Gluyas) take on returning interstate raiders Coco Sun (Tony & Calvin McEvoy) and Pulchritudinous in the Thomas Farms South Australian Derby in what should be a great edition of the race.

Patrick Payne will look to make it back-to-back wins (which hasn’t been done since Darren Weir in 2016-18) with Bold Soul nominated after winning the Group 3 Chairmans Stakes last weekend.

We will also see the Group 3 Queens Cup and Listed Adelaide Guineas across the 9-race card on the day.

Fashions on the Field (open to 18y+) will return, where patrons can enter the competition and visit an on-course Fashion Stable including tailor services from Oscar Hunt and free make-up touch ups for that extra runway ready look.

Judging this Autumn will include the traditional Best Dressed and Best Suited nods in Derby appropriate monochrome alongside, for the first time, a third category for those keen to incorporate a colourful take on Kentucky Derby flair; the internationally renowned race also taking place on May 4 across the globe. Further information on judges and prizes will soon be announced.

If you are looking for a day full of racing, exquisite hospitality and fashions, newly appointed Fashion Curator for SA Derby Day 2024 at Morphettville, Chris Kontos, will be hosting an exclusive fashion showcase within the Champions Balcony package in the new Wolf Blass Event Centre, who says touches of colour are more than acceptable.

“There will be a majority of black and white looks in line with tradition, but touches of colour, print and glamour are always accepted to impress,” says Chris. “I want to see a chic city cowboy (or girl) look that’s hitting the globe right now, or some elevated 80’s tailoring with a touch of glamour.”

For general admission punters,  Putt For Dough was sunk twice last week, and you can still have a crack at the 70-foot monster to share in the $100k prize on offer.

Why not take advantage of free GA entry* in celebration of our partnership with Sportsbet and head down to watch some of Australia’s best equine athletes go head-to-head on the track as well as the party atmosphere of the Putt For Dough trackside. *Conditions apply.
