Morphettville Wrap Up – 14 October

16 October 2023

It took a little bit for the weather to get the Spring memo, but it didn’t take long before the course was bathed in sunshine and ensured a great start to the 2023 Spring Carnival on and off the track.

The combination of Richard & Chantelle Jolly and Jake Toeroek got things started in a wet first race with favourite, Losesomewinmore hitting the front in the home turn and didn’t look like losing, taking home the win by over a length.

After missing 12 months through injury, Chantelle was very pleased with four-year-old gelding.

“We didn’t think we would get him to the races, but for him to come out and show us this kind of ability has been worth waiting for.

We’re happy to reap the awards and race him in South Australia,” she said.

The Stuart Gower stable returned to the Morphettville winners list with Anotherhouse showing a strong turn of speed in the final 100m to score under Lachlan Neindorf.

Only taking ownership of the gelding in the last few months, Gower feels he can only get better moving forward.

“We thought he could win first up, but he ran a little keenly. He made up for it today.

“We will give him one more and then look to the Autumn campaign,” he said.

Philip Stokes scored a race-to-race double with two of the best races on the day, scoring with Jenkins (Race 4) and Street Delight (Race 5) with Lachlan Neindorf in the saddle.

It was a tough race Street Delight, but Tommy Stokes praised the ride from Neindorf.

“Hopefully she can build a bit of confidence from this run.

“It’s great to get a win early this prep and we will now think about what is next for her,” he said.

The main race of the day was the Listed Hill Smith Stakes which was convincingly won the Andrew Gluyas-trained three-year-old, Air Assault. It was the first Black Type winner for Gluyas since taking over the solo training duties from Leon Macdonald at the commencement of the 2023/24 racing season.

Speaking of Air Assault post-race, Andrew was very proud of his run.

“Stubby came up with a peach of a ride and really controlled the race.

“He had some poise in the stalls today and it was a credit to the staff who helped him prepare for today’s win,” he said.

Scoring a training treble to round out the card, the newest Stokes stable addition, Wakanjeja scored by over a length under Kayla Crowther.

Other results from the day saw Episodic (Will Clarken &Niki O’Shea), Set On You (Ryan Balfour), Nichish and Miss Kemie (Phillip Stokes), Dubenenko and Diamonds Choice (Chris Bieg), Keep Reading (Richard & Chantelle Jolly), Master At Arms (Stuart Gower), Sentimental Flame (Travis Doudle) and Wheels (Andrew Gluyas) coming away with place results.

The action is just getting started at Morphettville as we continue on with local thrills on the track during the Spring Racing Carnival this Saturday with Caulfield Cup Day on October 21.
