Race goers at Headquarters were treated to some fantastic spring weather to go along with plenty of action from the nine-race card that was on offer.
In the SA Metro Premiership Standings, thanks to their wins on the weekend, both Richard Jolly and Phillip Stokes closed in on current leader, Michael Hickmott at the top of the ladder.
Making it two wins from three starts, the Richard Jolly gelding, Huggle Time blew the field away early, scoring a 3.5l win under Jason Holder in Race 1.
Richard Jolly was caught off guard with the performance from the three-year-old.
“He drew the outside and missed the start and wasn’t himself.
“We sent him away for a few days and he worked well Tuesday (prior to the race).
“He was impressive today and raced away from them with plenty remaining in the tank,” he said.
The Phillip Stokes stable scored a double on the day through Jenkins (Race 3) and Wakanjeja to close out the card. For Jenkins, it was the geldings first win for (one day over) a year and he fought hard to the line with less than half a length separating him and fourth.
Tommy Stokes said he’s been quite consistent, and we were quite confident today.
“This race looked perfect for him and onwards and upwards now.
“He’s a lovely horse to have around the stable, and the girls like him a lot,” he said.
After a strong first run last prep, Grinzinger Prince finished strong from the back of the field under Emily Finnegan to win for Cody Reardon.
Having taken ownership of the five-year-old gelding in April this year, saying he had come back stronger this run.
“After a four-week break, he looks super, and I was expecting him to run well.
“He’s the kind of horse that likes to run fresh and he’s been good to me,” he said.
Other results on the day saw Nicish and Street Delight (Phillip Stokes), Overstrike (Chris Bieg), Foxy Femme (Peter & Belinda Blanch), Aitch D’amico (Byron Cozamanis), Ice Symphony and Alpha Flight (Richard & Chantelle Jolly), and Ichibansan (Andrew Gluyas) all coming away with place results.
We are now only 18 days until the 2023 Spring Racing Carnival at Morphettville commences and we will see six race days across five weeks coinciding with the Group 1 Racing in Melbourne.
