This weekend we celebrate a South Australian racing icon and Hall of Famer.

Leon Macdonald called time on his illustrious career a few weeks ago. Finishing with 1,276 wins including 11 Group 1’s, there is no doubting Leon’s credentials.

When Leon spoke with Terry McAulliffe on his last race day as a trainer, he was quite emotional and thankful of the support he has received.

“It’s been great, and everybody has been great to me, and racing has been very good to me also,” he said.

Leon’s former training partner, Andrew Gluyas, has stable star Manhatten Times accepted for the Listed 1400m race this Saturday and will be hoping to break through for his first winner and be presented with the trophy by his father-in-law post-race.

This weekend marks the third running of the Leon Macdonald Stakes, and this year, it is being embraced as a special opportunity to acknowledge the legacy he leaves behind.

  • 1986 SA Derby – French Cotton
  • 1997 Australasian Oaks – Mine Gold
  • 2009 SA Derby – Rebel Raider
  • 6 x SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (Group 3)
  • 1 x Leon Macdonald Stakes – Southern Speed
