The Caulfield Cup race day picked up right where Guinness on Guineas Day finished! A strong crowd was on hand to take in the racing and party action on offer trackside.
It was the familiar combination of Stubby and Andrew Gluyas getting proceedings under way as Lights of Broadway proving far too strong from the field winning by 2.5l.
With the blinkers on for the first time, five-year-old mare made it back-to-back wins and her first at Metro level and Molly Knowles said the team are expecting bigger things.
“She has certainly showed she can stay and comes out race day to show us what she’s got.
“Jason gave us a lot of confidence in the race, and it was a good ride. He knew he was on the best horse, and he rode it that way.
“We weren’t confident of running her in town, but winning with the blinkers on and we will look to run her in town again next start,” she said.
The third heat of the TAB Rebel Raider Series was taken out by a strong finishing Deepfloat Diva under Jake Toeroek.
It was the second run for the impressive three-year-old gelding as he made it two wins from two starts for the Richard & Chantelle Jolly Stable.
He made the team a little nervous with a late surge over the Travis Doudle-trained Wiggum, but Chantelle Jolly was happy to get the win.
“For him to come off his maiden and come into town on pure raw ability is exciting.
“He’s still got a lot to learn, but it’s exciting,” she said.
Richard & Chantelle Jolly made it a race-to-race double as Pudding returned to the winners list after his second race back from a short freshen up.
It was a treble on the day for the Jolly stable and Jake Toeroek also scored a treble steering Aviatress home in the TAB Viddora Series Heat.
Much the same as Deepfloat Diva, Aviatress followed up her maiden win with a strong debut Metro win.
“She was a bit slow out of the gates, but she hit the front and pricked her ears for the win,” Richard Jolly said.
“She probably did it a bit tough in the run, but pulled away late and is an exciting horse.
“We will chat with the Price (Bloodstock) team and look at the Viddora Series Final,” he said.
It was also a stable winning double on the day for the Will Clarken & Niki O’Shea stable with Silent Surrente (Race 4) and Superior Sam (Race 8) saluting.
Will Clarken was happy with the win and ride from Ben Price.
“It was a bold ride and Ben stoked her up early and got her flowing into the race,” he said.
“We think she’s a pretty smart mare and we hope to see her return to the black type horse she is.
“Ben and Niki were really confident going in to today, and she has done a really good job,” he said.
Other results from the day saw Wiggum (Travis Doudle), Kinetic Jewel (Phillip Stokes), Adelaide Ace and Episodic (Will Clarken & Niki O’Shea), Karacasu, Pointless Praise and Lady Simone (Richard & Chantelle Jolly), Rich Gina (Peter & Belinda Blanch) and Sabermetric (Gordon Richards & Damien Moyle) all come away with place results.
