Chris Kontos Q & A

3 May 2024

Before we jump into a Derby Day full of exceptional racing fashion, we spoke with our 2024 SA Derby Day Fashion Curator, Chris Kontos to get a few final tips and what to expect across the day.

A monochrome/pastel colour day is the theme for SA Derby Day this year. What are two tips you would provide to those putting the final touches on their outfits?

Monochrome vs pastel colour schemes really do complement each other. I feel if your base outfit is black and white then really any touch of colour will suit. A stunning pastel coloured head piece with matching accessories worn with a simple black dress is the ultimate statement of chicness. For the gents a well fitted black suit with the perfect white shirt to complement pastel accessories including tie, socks, and a fab silk hanky.

How has the racing fashion scene changed during your time involved with fashion, and what has been the most impactful change?

Not to give away my age, but I have been attending the races for more than 25 years. The strict guidelines from the past have relaxed somewhat. From the mini skirt and now men wearing tailored shorts to the track shows the progression of the races. Still depending on where you are in the world these rules will never change. I feel the South Australian racing scene has always been very progressive and inclusive to all.

Tell us a little about what to expect from the day.

Derby Day at Morphettville is all about coming and enjoying the atmosphere that is the new era at Morphettville.  The fashion I will be showcasing the glamour of being track side, there is nothing like getting dressed up and heading to the races.  I will be presenting fashions for all from Rundle Place together with leading milliners and talking about all the new season’s trends.

Fashions on the Field will return, where patrons can enter the competition and visit an on-course Fashion Stable including tailor services from Oscar Hunt and make-up touch ups for that extra runway ready look. Judging this Autumn will include the traditional Best Dressed and Best Suited nods in Derby appropriate monochrome alongside, for the first time, a third category for those keen to incorporate a colourful take on Kentucky Derby flair, a nod to the other famous Derby taking place across the globe this Saturday.

Our MC for the day will be Channel 7 presenter, Gertie Spurling, who returns after hosting the FOTF event on Adelaide Cup Day.

We have two returning FOTF judges, Stephanie Ockenden and Damian Porcaro and a first-time judge in Josh Reyes, from Oscar Hunt.

With thanks to Sportsbet you can claim up to two free General Admission tickets for the day or enjoy your day in style with Morphettville’s premium hospitality in the new Wolf Blass Event Centre. Along with the premium hospitality, Chris Kontos, will host an exclusive fashion experience supported by Rundle Place across the afternoon.
