McAvaney inducted into Hall of Fame
Renowned sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney OAM has been inducted into the South Australian Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame, recognised for his outstanding contribution to the racing industry at the Sportsbet SA Racing Awards and Hall of Fame at Morphettville on Saturday night.
Inducted in the Associate category, McAvaney was honoured in front of industry participants, racing supporters and dignitaries, including South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, who took part in the induction ceremony at the Wolf Blass Event Centre.
The induction acknowledges McAvaney’s significant impact on South Australian racing, spanning almost five decades. While he has become one of Australia’s most celebrated sporting broadcasters, his connection to racing in his home state has remained constant throughout his career.
Reflecting on the honour, McAvaney spoke of the significance of the recognition and his lifelong passion for South Australian racing.
“For somebody who grew up loving South Australian racing, idolising so many people that are in the Hall of Fame and never believing for one instance that I might be recognised in a similar way. It’s just one of the nights of my life,” McAvaney said.
“I think back to my parents and their love of racing and where it’s sort of brought me to and given me these opportunities.”

McAvaney’s journey in racing broadcasting began in 1977 when he called his first race meeting at Mindarie-Halidon. He later made his first on-air race call at Oakbank for radio station 5DN, laying the foundations for a remarkable career in sports media.
Beyond his broadcasting achievements, McAvaney has been a passionate advocate for South Australian racing, regularly supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the local industry, including increased prizemoney and sustainable funding.
His contribution has also extended behind the scenes through his long-standing involvement as a member of the South Australian Racing Hall of Fame selection panel and the South Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year panel.
The Hall of Fame induction recognises not only McAvaney’s distinguished broadcasting career, but also his enduring commitment to promoting and advancing South Australian thoroughbred racing.
