Morphettville Wrap Up – August 12

14 August 2023

Racing returned to Morphettville on Saturday, and we welcomed the 2023/24 racing season in a BIG way.

We saw the return of Behemoth and the running of the inaugural Group 3 Behemoth Stakes, which was taken out by the Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained See You In Heaven.

After a strong trial earlier this month, the four-year-old mare was too strong for Savotoxl and Manhatten Times.

Chantelle Jolly was pleased by the win and is excited to see where she goes to next.

“She missed the Autumn Carnival, but she went out and had a decent spell and has come back bigger and stronger.

“We now move on to the Leon Macdonald Stakes in two weeks over the 1400m,” she said.

It was a winning start to the new season for Phillip Stokes with his three-year-old gelding, Jewel Bay steered home by a nose under Kayla Crowther.

Tommy Stokes spoke to Racing.com’s Terry McAulliffe after the race.

“It was really good to tick off a win early in this prep.

“He’s going to take a lot out of the win, and is really suited to the 1200m,” he said.

It was back-to-back wins for the Scott Westover-trained Flyway and the first metro win for the gelding.

Scott was extremely happy with the win after the race.

“You never stop learning in this industry. We always knew he was going to win a Saturday race and it’s exciting to have a number of the ownership group here to celebrate the win today,” he said.

It was another Saturday win for the Ryan Balfour and Alana Livesey combination as Tres Belle built on her first up placing, to run over the field in the home straight to claim a tight win.

Andrew Gluyas stepped out for his first metro race day as a sole trainer after the retirement of Leon Macdonald at the end of the 2022/23 season.

With four runners on the day, Andrew was quite happy with his first solo race day.

“It was business as usual on the day.

“Manhatten Times ran a good third but come up against two very good horses. We will go back to the drawing board now and work out what we will do next with him,” he said.

Other results on the day saw Montepulciano and Does It (Richard & Chantelle Jolly), Merchant Boss (Travis Doudle), Zarace (Ken Sweeney), Flight Deck (Gordon Richards & Damien Moyle), Kong (Ryan Balfour) and Cool The Jets (Peter & Belinda Blanch) all running a place on the day.

We are back racing on the main track again this Saturday, August 19. Why not treat yourself to a race day in the The Winning Post Restaurant for the final Hooves and Vines event featuring Lloyd Brothers.
