The smell of spring
is well and truly in the air...
…and the Listed Penny Edition Stakes is one race that keeps producing year after year.
The race has been won by some of the greats of the Australian turf including Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes winners Gailo Chop and cult hero Alcopop, South Australian trained Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed and dual Cox Plate winner Fields of Omagh.
We could see another future star in the making with the locally trained Behemoth a warm favourite to claim the Listed feature. The David Jolly trained four-year-old was runner-up in the Group 1 Goodwood in May and the big strapping gelding looks like he has plenty of talent as he looks ahead to big races in the Spring Carnival across the border.
Another horse with plenty of talent is the Lindsay Park trained Long Leaf. The four year old already has $931k in prizemoney to his name to go with his three Listed wins and placings in Group 2 &3 company. The Hayes & Dabernig team are enjoying great success around the country and this horse looks like one to follow this spring.
There are also plenty of other local chances in great form with the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas trained Waging War coming off a last start third placing behind his talented stablemate Dalasan in the Group 3 Spring Stakes.
Sue Jaensch’s mare Amberdi is undefeated over 1400m and absolutely loves the Morphettville track, winning three of her five starts here while last start winner Vieira’s is in great touch, as is her jockey, Georgina Cartwright who is currently leading the SA Metropolitan Jockey standings with five wins already this season.
