Racing at Morphettville secured

Morphettville CEO Grant Mayer is proud to support a future-focused initiative preserving the long-term strength and viability of South Australia’s racing industry by bringing new housing opportunities to Morphettville’s surrounds.

In collaboration with the Malinauskas Labour Government approximately 14 hectares of residential land along Morphett Road and Bray Street will be unlocked. The move supports the creation of a diverse range of housing options, including medium-to-high density developments, townhouses, and small apartment buildings, within close reach of public transport, jobs, and essential community service.

Morphettville sought to rezone the Lots 51 & 52 (86-88) Morphett Road, Glengowrie Code Amendment for commercial use. Upon consultation with the Government and after they undertook thorough community consultation, they then decided to rezone the Morphettville/Glengowrie Horse Related Activities Code Amendment (Bray St). The two code amendments shift land from recreation and horse related uses to urban neighbourhood and suburban neighbourhood zones, supporting medium to high-density housing close to the CBD, public transport, and established amenities.

Morphettville CEO, Grant Mayer, welcomed the announcement saying the decision has future-proofed the racing industry.

“The opportunities this presents for Morphettville and the wider racing industry is incredibly exciting,” Mayer said.

“The rezoning gives us the flexibility to explore long-term commercial options that can enhance the viability of racing in South Australia for generations to come. While we don’t have immediate plans for the sites, the potential is significant.”

While enthusiastic about the future of Morphett Road, Mayer stressed the current operations remain unaffected.

“I’d like to reassure everyone there will be no impact to racing or training at Morphettville in the foreseeable future,” he said.

“We’re committed to engaging directly with the trainers and stakeholders impacted by this decision to ensure a smooth and supportive transition plan when the time comes.”

Mayer also highlighted the positive impact the change could have on race day experience.

“We’re excited about what this could potentially bring to the atmosphere of the racecourse and how it might elevate our race day,” he added.
