Terry’s Spring Tips – Derby Day

30 October 2025

The magnificent Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival kicks off on Saturday with Derby Day. What a day it is with three Group 1 races and the remaining six races all Group events.

In the three big ones at Flemington, I’m going to be in the corner of champion trainer Chris Waller.

Beiwacht in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), Providence in the Victoria Derby (2500m), and Leica Lucy in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m).

Locally, after the disappointment of losing six races last Saturday due to the lightning, we go again at Morphettville with a bumper 10-race card this Saturday.

We should see the favourite Guru Warrior being mighty hard to beat in the opener, the Fotobase Group Handicap over 2028m, for an in-form trainer Andrew Gluyas yard and a red-hot jockey Jason Holder.

Most of the races appear to be loaded with chances, so I am sure there is plenty of value to be found if you can pinpoint a winner or two.

A few that have caught my eye at nice each way odds are:

Race 6 – Hard Prince in the MM Electrical Handicap over 1600m

Race 7 – High Tor in the Sherriff Electrical Wholesalers 50th Year Handicap over 1600m

Race 8 – He’s A Cool Cat in the Dave Loy Handicap over 1050m.

A mad roughie that I feel can run a cheeky race is a new addition to the astute Shayne and Chelsea Cahill team in Dual Fuel in Race 5, the Peter Elberg Funerals Handicap over 1800m.

Hoping I have something to be excited about there by the end of the day and good luck with your own horses and thoughts.

Enjoy Derby Day!
