Terry’s Spring Tips – Melbourne Cup Day

3 November 2025

The first Tuesday in November is ultimately Australia’s most famous race day.

At Flemington in Melbourne, eyes from around the globe will focus on the iconic Lexus Melbourne Cup. This year’s running is set to play out on a rain-affected track with heavy rainfall in Melbourne on Cup Day eve.

From a South Australian perspective, it will be the famous West Coast family of the McEvoy’s from Streaky Bay who will carry the hopes of South Australia.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy will chase a record equaling fourth success in the big two miler on UK stayer Absurde, while his Uncle Tony and cousin Calvin will attempt to notch a maiden Cup win and a special Caulfield Cup / Melbourne Cup double with Half Yours.

Just for a bit more of a South Australian result Jamie Melham will partner Half Yours.

I will be cheering for both Absurde and Half Yours, but will also keeping an eye on Flatten The Curve representing Germany for the Henk Grewe stable with the jockey perhaps boasting the best name in the race Thore Hammer Hansen guiding the galloper.

Locally at Morphettville it is a 10-race card and in the opener Golden Guru looks extremely hard to beat for an in-form Jason Holder and the Andrew Gluyas team.

Smiling Assassin has been a ripping horse for his breeders the Daken’s and likewise for trainer Garret Lynch. In what is a very thin race I think he can post career win number 14 with Tala Hutchinson in the saddle in Race 4, the Peter Elberg Funerals Benchmark 56 Handicap over 2500m.

Best of luck with your Tuesday on the day when the nation’s most famous horse race, the Lexus Melbourne Cup brings our great country to a standstill.
