Sghirripa delivered a reminder of his class at Morphettville on Saturday, holding off Klabel to claim a gritty win in the $120,000 Listed Durbridge Handicap.
The talented grey won the 2024 Standish Handicap, 749 days ago, before going on a 13-start winless streak that included an unlucky run in the 2024 Oakleigh Plate, and a narrow second to Asfoora last year.
More than two years since his last win and under the watchful eye of jockey Campbell Rawiller, Sghirripa would not settle for second yet again, shaking off Sir Now, before holding off Klabel in the run to the winning post.
Trainer Shane Oxlade said it has been a long time between victories and has had to be patient with the son of Lonhro, who pinched an eighth career win, ticking over $725,000 in prizemoney.

Rawiller delivered in the saddle and in doing so notched his first stakes winner as a jockey.
Todd Pannell is laying his claim to the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership with another winning treble.
Pannell produced great rides aboard in-form mare Cielao in the Bonner’s Bucks Day Handicap (1400m) and Ole Go in the Sportsbet Feed Handicap (1050m) to secure a race-to-race double for trainer Michael Hickmott, before saluting on board Royal Fox in an upset win for dual-license holder Jess Tzaferis in the Happy 60th D’Arcy Evans Handicap (1600m).
Cranbourne trainer Matt Jenkins crossed the border to score his first winner as a solo trainer with Prestige Ka Ying in the PFD Food Services Maiden Plate (1200m) with jockey Rochelle Milnes in a Maiden Plate.
Pannell’s treble saw him claim riding honours on Saturday’s huge 11-race card ahead of Jason Holder, who scored a winning double.
Holder leads the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership with 25 winners, with Pannell and Jacob Opperman hunting him down in equal second with 21 victories.
Jockey Connor Murtagh claimed his 200th career win on Saturday, with victory aboard Surprise Coming in the Sportsbet More Places Handicap (1600m).
