Morphettville Wrap Up – 22 July

24 July 2023

It was the penultimate race meeting of the 2022/23 Racing Season at Morphettville and while the weather may have been a little cloudy and wet, but we saw some great racing action on the Parks Track for this weeks wrap-up.

The Ryan Balfour-trained Picargo continued his winning ways with a strong win in front of his large and loud ownership group.

“He’s got a great following and support is never far away for him,” Balfour said.

“It was a small field today and thought it could be a bit tricky, but he ran a great race.

“With the big weight he was just a warrior, and it was a perfectly run race by Alana (Livesey),” he said.

It was almost a year between wins, but Deevine crossed the line in front of stable-mate Kong making it a race quinella for Ryan Balfour.

Balfour said it was pleasing to see the two run so well fresh in their preparations.

“Deevine has been knocking on the door for a metro win and it was a great return.

“There’s always been glimpses, but it’s taken a while to happen,” he said.

Peacemaker returned a winner for trainer Chris Bieg with the four-year-old gelding running over the field in the home straight.

While the race didn’t go as planned for jockey, Teagan Voorham, he come away with a strong win in what has been a career best season for the Chris Bieg stable.

“It wasn’t plan-A for the run, but he’s been a great pick up for the stable.

“It’s been a very good season and we have a few more hopefuls for the last few races,” he said.

It was another winning weekend for Will Clarken & Niki O’Shea closing out the card with Son of Bielski under Ben Price.

Niki O’Shea felt he was a little unlucky in his mid-week placing but felt he had more to back it up on the weekend.

He hasn’t put a foot wrong since coming to the stable.

“He has a great ownership group, and we are going well at the moment,” he said.

We close out the 2022/23 for Headquarters this Saturday with the 1050m Listed Lightning Stakes on the feature on a nine-race card. You can pre-purchase your tickets here.
